This old man's son is STEALING his SSI Funds! What to do

This old man's son is STEALING his SSI Funds! What to do?
I volunteer at a nursing home and right now this old man is receiving monthly SSI funds and other kind of funds from the government. (He was a taxpayer, US Citizen, and now retired). However, a few years ago, he was very sick and decided to let his son manage his funds, so he transferred his monthly payments from the government to his son. Now, this old man wants to return to China and has recovered from his illness so he asks his son for his money back. His son replies "In Your Dreams." Apparently, his son wants to keep the money and is willing to let his own father die unwillingly in the US. I know that it is nearly impossible to get the money back already, but it is possible to stop the monthly payments from the son and back to the old man. What kind of services is available for this? A Social Worker? I already left a note for the nurse and the social worker, who only works on weekdays :(. Anyways, any suggestions/help is gratefully accepted. Thanks.

the only way his son can legally be getting his money is he is the rep payee. even then the money has to be used for the father. contact the local social security office, if the father volunteered the son as payee all he has to do is tell them he no longer wants checks to go to son. also inform social security of the missing money. as a payee you have to have an accounting (receipts, etc.) of how you spent the money. if there is any left it must be returned. social security will go after the son if he missuesd his fathers funds. call them immediately.

You took the right step by leaving the note for the social worker and nurse. now be dogged and follow up. Make sure they are taking this seriously. The police need to be called, but you as a volunteer are probably not in a position to do that. But you can continue to bring this issue up with the nurse and social worker to be sure they take it seriously.

Help the old fellow to at least get the incoming money transferred back to himself. You are on the right track and you have a good heart. Be persistent and follow up with calls, always ask for supervisors to get your inquiry to the right person. Call the US Department of Labor - Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration.
